How does noise reduction work?
The tool uses an edge-preserving mean filter (similar to bilateral filtering). It smooths flat areas to remove noise while keeping edges sharp. Only neighboring pixels with similar colors are averaged together.
What type of noise can it remove?
It is most effective on luminance noise (grain) from high ISO photos and compression artifacts from JPEG files. It can also reduce color noise. Heavy noise may require multiple passes.
Will it affect image sharpness?
Some softening is inevitable with noise reduction. The edge-preserving algorithm minimizes this, but very high strength settings will soften fine details. Use the before/after preview to find the right balance.
